Mary Lou Valdez joined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as Associate Commissioner for International Programs in January 2009. In collaboration with FDA program centers and offices, Lou leads and manages OIP staff around the world, catalyzing FDA global engagement in collaboration with regulatory partners, ministries of health and agriculture, other USG Agencies, industry, academia, multilateral organizations, and related stakeholders. FDA foreign posts include: China, India, Europe, and Latin America.
Prior to her FDA service, she held various positions in international health diplomacy for 18 years at the Office of Global Health Affairs, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. There Lou led the development of U.S. policy positions for complex public health issues, and promulgated them within the governance processes of multilateral organizations and member governments. Multilateral organizations included the WHO, UNICEF, OECD, and UN special sessions.
